Mapping Istanbul

Mapping Istanbul is disclosing large tracts of uncharted contemporary istanbul.

Commissioned by Garanti Gallery - now SALT - two years of intensive work has culminated into the book MAPPING ISTANBUL. In this collaborative project, involving many of the city’s leading academia and professional experts such as Murat Güvenç and Haluk Gerçek, visualization of the gathered data was realized by Superpool. Mapping Istanbul is the most comprehensive collection of maps on Istanbul to date.

Mapping Istanbul presents Istanbul’s different structures through maps, comparative research and essays. The publication consists of original maps based on current data on topics including population, economic activity, education, land use, transportation, earthquakes, buildings, housing, health, social infrastructure, consumption, and energy, presented in line with essays and articles written by experts conducting research on these issues. The introduction text is by Charles Waldheim who coined the term “landscape urbanism” to define the re-emergence of landscape as a tool for contemporary urban structure. The urban planner and cartographer Murat Güvenç, whose work in the field of social geography has constructed the basis of Mapping Istanbul, focuses in his essays on the peculiar conditions that formed Istanbul’s built environment and the ways in which the city’s social geography can be deciphered through maps.

The book is designed by Project Projects, renowned for their successful design experiences for publications, exhibitions, and interactive projects.
