Mapping Istanbul in 2015

Mapping Istanbul (2009) is a publication of a set of original maps, illustrated further with expert essays and statistical charts. Data provided in the book dates back to 2008 and even earlier to 2000 in a number of graphs and maps.

In 2015 it is difficult to imagine Mapping Istanbul without an armed conflict map. Or a number of public protest maps. Back in 2009, 3 million Syrians had not yet been forced out of their country. Social media was in its infancy and its power in unifying people from all over the world was not yet discovered. Istanbul was one step before becoming the heedless construction site as it is in 2015.

Much more has happened in the past six years than the eight-year window when Mapping Istanbul sourced its content. A set of short videos, Mapping Istanbul in 2015 remembers those last six years.

The update "Mapping Istanbul in 2015" was initially created for the MAXXI exhibition "ISTANBUL. PASSION, JOY, FURY" in Rome open from 11 December 2015 - 30 April 2016.
